Submissions OPEN Sept. 12 - Dec. 13 2024

Book of Matches welcomes unsolicited work. We will consider only work that has not been published in print or appeared online previously in English.

We accept simultaneous submissions but ask that you notify us promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere; please do not send your withdrawal in a new email -- send a message in your original submission email indicating that all or part of your work has been accepted elsewhere.

  • We currently accept submissions here: bookofmatcheslitmag@gmail.com

  • We are currently accepting submissions for the relevant genres listed below.

  • Please wait until you've heard from us regarding a submission before submitting additional work.

  • Book of Matches publishes three issues per year.

Guidelines

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE IN THE EMAIL SUBJECT LINE ONLY THE FOLLOWING: AUTHOR'S LAST NAME: GENRE (By way of example - Tingle: Poetry).

Please do NOT include any additional identifying information in your email or within your submission document. Please do not include a bio until your work has been accepted for publication.

INCLUDE IN THE BODY OF YOUR EMAIL A WORD COUNT FOR ALL PROSE SUBMISSIONS.

DURING OPEN SUBMISSION PERIODS YOU MAY SUBMIT IN MULTIPLE GENRES, BUT ONLY ONCE PER GENRE. Additional submissions will be left unread in the event that more than one is sent to us in a single submission period.

Please note: If previously published in Book of Matches, please do not submit to the issue immediately following the one you were published in. For example, if you are published in Issue 1, please wait until Issue 3 to submit again.

Poetry

We accept poetry submissions online here: bookofmatcheslitmag@gmail.com. Send no more than either three poems or six pages in Times New Roman 12-point font in a single document (.doc or .docx only please). PDFs will not be read. Please avoid posting any prose poetry submissions into the body of your email as it makes formatting it, if accepted, time consuming for us.

Fiction and Nonfiction

We accept prose submissions online here: bookofmatcheslitmag@gmail.com

For prose, submit one story or essay. (You may submit both a story and an essay if you wish; please submit them separately.) We rarely publish work that is longer than 2,100 words, though we will consider it if it really makes us tingle.

We do consider both micro fiction and micro creative-nonfiction (100-500 words). All submissions are to be either .doc or .docx only please. PDFs will not be read. Please avoid posting any prose submissions into the body of your email as it makes formatting it, if accepted, time consuming for us.

Please read the fiction work in our previous issues to get a feel for what we publish.

Translation

We accept submissions of translations in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry online here: bookofmatcheslitmag@gmail.com.

Please submit only one translated story, essay, or poem set at a time. We request that each translation is accompanied by a statement indicating that the English translation rights are available as well as a copy of the original text.

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE IN THE EMAIL SUBJECT LINE ONLY THE FOLLOWING: AUTHOR'S LAST NAME: GENRE (By way of example - Tingle: Poetry). INCLUDE IN THE BODY OF YOUR EMAIL A WORD COUNT FOR ALL PROSE SUBMISSIONS.
