Issue 13 Welcomes the New Year!

Writer's picture: Book of MatchesBook of Matches

As we pull out a chair from our table to offer the New Year a seat, it is wise to keep our eyes trained on the window ahead, and the dirt floor below. Feasts have concluded, but quieter meals await and promise space for conversation and compromise. The pot often overflows when we are busy watching for storms that might never blow open our door. Though, contentment holds a brighter court, the stew makes way to its bowl, and clouds carry on their business without attention.

In taking spade and clay to this issue, fortuitous and tricksy at 13, we were reminded of those marriages no one sees—a knife to bread, titmouse to underbrush, trilobite to sand, spun wool to needle, a mermaid purse to a calm tide. These unions are the guardians of Winter, and exemplify coupled preachers shouting, murmuring, and composing Spring hopes. May the poetry and prose in this issue leave you with a full belly and a thousand years of thought. A huge thank you to our wonderful contributors and thoughtful readership -- this gift is of your making!
